You'll soon be able to buy an SSD with 30 TB of storage

There's something about storing immense amounts of data on a tiny gadget that makes the tech geek's imagination run wild. A decade ago, 30 terabytes was a superfluous amount of storage, reserved for professional use. Not anymore. Soon, you'll be able to buy a single 2.5-inch SSD and store roughly 5,700 HD movies on it.

This is thanks to Samsung, which announced on Monday it will start mass producing the largest capacity SCSI SSD.

The PM1643, as it's called, combines 32 1TB NAND flash packages for a total capacity of 30.72 terabytes. Besides being capacious, it's also speedy, with 2,100MB/s and 1,700 MB/s sequential read and write speeds, respectively.

"With our launch of the 30.72TB SSD, we are once again shattering the enterprise storage capacity barrier, and in the process, opening up new horizons for ultra-high capacity storage systems worldwide," said Jaesoo Han, executive VP of Memory Sales & Marketing Team at Samsung, and I applaud him for trying to make the SSD market exciting with words like "shattering" and "new horizons".

The only question now is what's cooler: Having 30.72 terabytes in your hand, or having 512GB on the tip of your finger in the form of Samsung's new microSD card?

There's no word on exact launch date or price, but we reckon it won't be particularly cheap. Samsung said it has started manufacturing "initial quantities" of the 30.72TB variant in January, but will expand the lineup with smaller capacity variants, from 800GB to 15.36TB, so there will be plenty of choices for every pocket.
