Hey, here’s something we don’t get all that often: A debut smartphone from a company that’s never made one before, with reason to believe that it might actually be good.
That’ll be the hope, anyway, when Nothing reveals the Phone (1) on Tuesday, July 12 at 11 a.m. ET during its “Return to Instinct” event. We don’t know anything about the livestream aside from the fact that Nothing, the startup founded by OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei, will show off its debut handset. Anyone who’s interested in watching live can RSVP on Nothing’s website.
In case you aren’t familiar with Nothing, it’s a new tech company that so far has only released one product: The Nothing Ear (1)wireless earbuds. For just $100, they were surprisingly nice earbuds with a distinct, high-tech look (complete with transparent casing), active noise cancelation, and full functionality between both iOS and Android. They were easily some of the best wireless earbudsof 2021.

With that in mind, it’s easy to assume the Phone (1) will follow the same basic principles of being cheap, stylish, and nice to use. A leak courtesy of TechDroiderclaims it’ll have a sizable 6.55-inch OLED display, while Pei himself seemingly confirmed in May that it’ll have the same transparent look as the Ear (1). Naturally, as is the case with anything not made by Apple, it’s safe to assume the Phone (1) will run on Android.

Other details like price, battery life, and any unique features will have to wait until the announcement in July. But if the Phone (1) is anywhere near as good as the Ear (1), that would be nice. I’ll settle for a phone that looksas cool as those earbuds.
