The first day at school is an exciting albeit tense milestone for everyone, even more so for someone who's been under intense media attention since his birth.

An apprehensive Prince George started his first day at Thomas's Battersea, clutching firmly his father William's hand as his mother, the Duchess of Cambridge, was still unwell from severe morning sickness.

Prince William drove his son through the school gates and carried his bag as the pair walked up to the entrance.

The 4-year-old Prince looked pretty nervous, staring at his feet as they approached the school's front door where they greeted head of lower school Helen Haslem.

He shook her hand before being accompanied to his first class.

Kensington Palace said the young prince will be known at school as George Cambridge.

The Telegraphreported the Prince will be in a class of up to 22 children and will be given his own coat peg with his name on it and a desk.

A Kensington Palace spokesman said: "Unfortunately the Duchess of Cambridge remains unwell, and will not be able to accompany Prince George on his first day of school. The Duke of Cambridge will drop off Prince George this morning as planned."

Kate, who is less than 12 weeks pregnant, is suffering from Hyperemesis Gravidarum—a severe form of morning sickness— as she has done with her previous two pregnancies.
